The Secret Sauce: Why Your Gear Choice is the Heart of Every Great Story

I’ve spent a lot of time behind the lens, and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that storytelling isn’t just about what you say, it’s about how it feels. In the world of visual marketing, that “feeling” usually starts with the gear you choose to carry.

Whether you are building a brand or just trying to capture a specific vibe for your next project, the tools you use act as your voice. I’m always looking for that perfect balance between high-end quality and a seamless workflow.

Here is my take on the essential gear every creator needs to start telling better stories today.

1. The Soul of the Shot: Choosing Your Camera

You don’t need the most expensive setup on the planet, but you do need a camera that understands the look you’re going for. Lately, I’ve been leaning back into that raw, organic feel that only certain cameras can capture.

If you’re looking to level up, here are a few pieces of gear that I personally vouch for:

  • SONY FX3: This is my go-to for that crisp, cinematic aesthetic. It handles low light like a dream and keeps the colors looking natural.
  • SONY A7SIII: If you are more into the “run-and-gun” style, this one is a beast. It’s lightweight but still packs a punch in terms of resolution.
  • Fuji XM-5: For those who want that authentic, nostalgic grain, this is the one to grab.

2. It’s Not Just About the Visuals

We’ve all seen beautiful videos that feel “empty.” Usually, it’s because the creator forgot the narrative. When I’m planning a shoot for Behind the Stories, I start with the “why.” Why does this shot matter? How does this camera movement help the audience feel the brand’s message?

Visual marketing is 20% gear and 80% psychology. You want to use your gear to guide the viewer’s eyes exactly where you want them.

3. The Magic Happens in Post

Once the cards are full and the lights are off, the real storytelling begins. I’m a huge fan of keeping the post-production process clean. I personally use DaVinci Resolve because the color grading tools allow me to really dial in that specific “look” I planned for during the shoot.

When you have a solid workflow, you spend less time fighting with the software and more time actually being creative.

4. Keep it Simple, Keep it Real

My biggest piece of advice for creators just starting out? Don’t get bogged down by “tech-overload.” Start with one solid camera, a lens that gives you a bit of depth, and a story worth telling.

The best gear is the gear that stays out of your way and lets you create.
